General Description: The Ocularist is responsible for fitting and fabricating custom ocular prostheses as well as training patients on how to insert, remove, clean, and care for their prosthetic.
Essential Responsibilities:
Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Inability to perform these responsibilities, with or without an accommodation, may result in disqualification from the position.
Fits patients for ocular prostheses.
Fabricates and customizes ocular prostheses.
Trains patients on how to insert, remove, clean, and care for their prosthetic.
Performs follow-up care, including assessment of, and adjustment to, fit and function of prostheses and/or treatment plan as necessary.
Communicates with healthcare team members to optimize patient care.
Demonstrates thorough, accurate, and timely clinical, technical, and financial documentation.
Demonstrates effective time management by balancing direct and indirect patient care responsibilities, including appointment readiness.
Serves as a resource by teaching and developing staff members.
Aids in managing proper inventory of materials and supplies.
Promotes a safe and professional environment for patient care.
General Responsibilities:
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Completion of American Society of Ocularists educational program required.
Experience: 5 years of experience required.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Board Certified Ocularist (BCO) issued by the National Examining Board of Ocularists (NEBO) required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced understanding of the eye’s structure and function.
Expert knowledge of materials and techniques required to create ocular prostheses.
Strong attention to detail necessary to ensure the best fit and appearance for patients.
Capacity to understand and support patients.
Ability to communicate efficiently and professionally verbally and in writing.
Ability to adapt and make adjustments based on patient needs and condition.
