Location: University of Oklahoma Medical Center

Shift Available: Full time (40 hours/weekly)

* Shift typically start around 7am has staggered shifts. (10 hour shifts)

On-Call starts at 3:30 or end of shift if later and goes to 0700 on weekdays. Weekends are 0700 Saturday morning to 0700 Monday morning. Usually 1 weekend in an 8-week rotation and maybe 5-6 weekdays in that same rotation.

OU Health’s Adult Endoscopy unit has recently relocated to a newly renovated space at OUMC! This unit boasts a fast-paced environment providing care to patients in need of gastrointestinal and pulmonary endoscopic care. Some of the advanced endoscopic procedures being done at OU are at the only location in the state to have them performed! RNs on this unit have large support from Advanced Provider Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Care Team Associates, and a Health Unit Coordinator. Care areas specific to this unit include patient prep, procedural rooms, and phase one and two recovery. 

  •  Procedures include EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, PEG tube placement, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, and pleural tube placement and removal. Required skills include time management and flexibility. Required nursing skills include BLS and ACLS. Experience in PACU/procedural circulating preferred but not required. 

  • The position is very hands on and includes some variety in working shifts. Nurses are able to self-schedule and choose from pre/post and circulating options. Some call is required.
  • Nurses who like a lot of flexibility in their day love this position. Every day, the patient load is different and nurses get to be a part of new, cutting edge procedures. Nurses are able to use their critical thinking skills and gain technical knowledge in working with the surgical technicians to assist during procedures.

General Description:

Under immediate to general supervision, performs duties in the capacity of an Endoscopic Technician to assist with the endoscopic procedures performed in an operating or procedure room. Responsible for receiving, and distributing endoscopes for procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Delivers  audio-visual equipment in designated room/location
  • Performs pre-cleaning of endoscopes at bedside or point of use/procedure room
  • Maintains appropriate records  for inventory reprocessed
  • Monitor expirations dates of processed/disinfected scopes and reprocess expired scopes accordingly
  • Performs equipment troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and more complex repairs
  • Ensures timely reprocessing of scopes to meet the needs of procedures
  • Moves lights and flat panels to correct locations
  • Operate Medivators Automated Endoscope Reprocessors  Advantage Plus
  • Perform duties in accordance to manufacturer’s Instructions for use
  • Sends in repairs for all equipment and obtains loaners
  • Responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging and High level disinfecting of all endoscopes and bronchoscopes.
  • Manipulates such instruments to aid in the efficiency of the endoscopist and avoid hazard to patient.  Observes progress of endoscopy and provides additional instruments, supplies or other items as needed.  *Recognizes and corrects breaks in sterile technique. 
  • Cleans and disinfects contaminated instruments, equipment and supplies.
  • Cleans procedure room areas and disposes of soiled linen. 
  • May assist in the training of GI Technicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: HS Diploma or GED. Associate’s degree preferred.

Experience: 0 - 3 years of relevant healthcare experience or sterile processing experience or experience as a surgical technologists preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Technician certification from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) as a Certified Endoscopic Reprocessor (CER) or Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) within 12 months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Ability to write clearly and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate computer and other equipment required for the job.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to audio and video equipment.
  • Ability to use audio/video equipment to record surgical procedures.
  • Ability to operate Steris and autoclave equipment and to wrap instruments.
