Job Description:

General Description: The Ocularist is responsible for fitting and fabricating custom ocular prostheses as well as training patients on how to insert, remove, clean, and care for their prosthetic.  

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities, with or without an accommodation, may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • Fits patients for ocular prostheses.

  • Fabricates and customizes ocular prostheses.

  • Trains patients on how to insert, remove, clean, and care for their prosthetic.

  • Performs follow-up care, including assessment of, and adjustment to, fit and function of prostheses and/or treatment plan as necessary.

  • Communicates with healthcare team members to optimize patient care.

  • Demonstrates thorough, accurate, and timely clinical, technical, and financial documentation.

  • Demonstrates effective time management by balancing direct and indirect patient care responsibilities, including appointment readiness.

  • Serves as a resource by teaching and developing staff members.

  • Aids in managing proper inventory of materials and supplies.

  • Promotes a safe and professional environment for patient care.

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Completion of American Society of Ocularists educational program required.

Experience: 5 years of experience required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Board Certified Ocularist (BCO) issued by the National Examining Board of Ocularists (NEBO) required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Advanced understanding of the eye’s structure and function.

  • Expert knowledge of materials and techniques required to create ocular prostheses.

  • Strong attention to detail necessary to ensure the best fit and appearance for patients.

  • Capacity to understand and support patients.

  • Ability to communicate efficiently and professionally verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to adapt and make adjustments based on patient needs and condition.
