The Certified Ophthalmic Technician performs patient care tasks under the supervision of and as ordered by a physician. Certified Technicians can handle a wide range of duties while using equipment to perform the initial testing needed to prepare a patient for an exam with an Ophthalmologist.
Essential Responsibilities

Assists physicians with patient history.
Performs a variety of tests to include visual acuity tests, lensometry, pupil exam, keratometry, tonometry, refraction. and retinoscopy.
Provide patient services to include ocular dressings and shields, administer topical medications under the direct supervision of a physician.
Provide a variety of specialized tests as directed by the physician to include the PAM, BAT, color vision tests, Amsler grid, stereopsis, Schirmer’s, pachymeter measurements, corneal topography photographs, worth 4 dot, topography, and motility evaluation.
Perform visual field tests on Humphrey, Goldmann, Tangent, and Dicon Perimeters.
Basic computer skills needed to access physician’s schedules, patient appointments, and chart numbers.
Assists in minor surgical procedures.
Cleans and stocks exam rooms, laser rooms, and minor surgery rooms.
Sterilize and package instruments.
Perform basic maintenance on equipment.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education Requirements
High School Diploma or GED Required.
Experience Requirements
0 – 3 years’ experience working as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
License/Certification/Registration Requirements
Successful completion of Ophthalmic Technician Certification by JCAPHO.
Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements
Good reading and writing skills.
Good verbal communication skills
Ability to work in close contact with patients in a caring, professionally competent manner.
Ability to perform tasks accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision under moderately stressful situations.
Ability to perform tasks accurately and efficiently.
Ability to cooperate in a team effort.
Continuing education credits as required by JCAPHO.
