Job Description
Under general direction of section Medical Director, Lab Director and Section Manager provide oversite, training, and technical assistance for both moderate and waived complexity point of care testing in both a hospital and ambulatory setting. Ensure quality and accuracy of testing through operator training, competency assessment, equipment monitoring and maintenance, quality review and proficiency testing. Ensure compliance with all applicable regulating entities.
Essential Responsibilities

- Provides technical oversight for Point of Care testing performed throughout OU Health to meet/exceed accreditation standards.
- Ensures that the test systems are properly functioning. Maintains, troubleshoots, and takes corrective action with equipment as needed.
- Works with nursing, physicians, employees, and management as needed to ensure Point of Care testing is running efficiently and effectively.
- Travel to each site at least monthly.
- Coordinates training and competency assessment of testing personnel.
- Develop/maintain teaching and training materials. As well as competency assessment materials.
- Participate in inspection readiness and tracer activities for appropriate regulatory and accreditation agencies.
- Review quality control to identify problems and troubleshooting.
- Perform validation/verification studies for new instruments, methods, and tests.
- Assist with maintaining inventory and supplies for the Point of Care testing.
- Provide support for point of care related information systems, including implementation and validation of new middleware/software/test systems/firmware.
- Monitor POC middleware and software systems for errors.
- Review and respond to service tickets related to POC instrumentation.
- Follows guidelines related to Health insurance Portability and Accountability Act, designed to prevent, or detect unauthorized disclosure of Protected Heath Information.
- Promotes culture of safety for patients through proper identification, proper reporting, documentation, and prevention of medical errors in a non-punitive environment.
- Participates in the teaching/training of staff and students.
- Communicate regularly with managers to relay problems or concerns.
- Assist in the total quality management in all aspects of training, testing and quality review. Assist in quality assurance and proficiency testing activities.
- Attend appropriate meetings as assigned.
- Participates in continuing education.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree or Medical Technology degree required. Bachelor’s degree must include minimally 60 semester hours or equivalent, that includes either: 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses OR 24 semester hours – 6 chemistry, 6 biology and 12 chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology any combination. Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) or Master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MLS) or related science or healthcare field preferred
Experience: 3-5 years of experience in a clinical laboratory with emphasis on skills in one or more subspecialties: Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation and other Point of Care tests required
License/Certification Required: None Required. Certification (Medical Laboratory Scientist, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Technologist in Blood Bank, Molecular Biology) by the board of American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.
