General Description:

The Transport Registered Nurse (RN) provides quality nursing care, treatment, and stabilization of critically ill patients, in conjunction with fellow team members, during transport. The Transport RN will oversee all aspects of patient care during transport, and is responsible for organizing, implementing, and coordinating patient care as directed by the Physician for the purpose of stabilization of the transfer.

In addition to caring for the patients in the pre-hospital environment, the transport RN will be part of the care delivery to the patients at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital during non-transport times. The Transport RN will assist in the delivery of care in the NICU, PICU, Pediatric ED, or any other area that requires the expertise of the pediatric care nurse, noting that the Transport RN’s first responsibility is to transport, and they must be made available to leave the facility within target timelines.

Outreach activities are also an integral part of the Transport RN role. These may include education of regional providers, public relations activities, and other quality activities.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides critical care expertise to assist the team with patient assessment, stabilization, interventions, and patient communications.
  • Ability to distinguish normal from abnormal findings for the neonate, pediatric, adult, ECMO, and high-risk obstetrical patients.
  • Successfully assess the at-risk status.
  • Commit to Safety policy and process for all patient care and modes of transport.
  • Follow all clinical protocols.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as necessary per protocol and policies.
  • Strong communication skills to deliver efficient and effective information to referral staff, care team, family and patients.
  • Facilitates learning for patients and families, nursing staff, other members of the health care team and community; integrating appropriate education throughout the continuum of care to help them participate and/or make informed decisions about their health care and treatments, including health promotion and disease prevention. Assess and documents learning needs and outcomes.
  • Ensure diligent compliance to readiness checks, medication management, and documentation.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of department operations, policies, procedures, products, programs relating to the transport environment and patient populations. Researches, identifies, and implements evidence based practice to improve the quality of care provided to patients and families.
  • Identifies personal, departmental, and hospital goals. Collaborates in a positive manner towards the success of the goals by offering input, ideas, and solutions.
  • Maintains department responsibilities by attending educational opportunities, staff meetings, departmental and hospital interdisciplinary meetings, case reviews, and training.
  • Supports the patient logistics aspect of the team and patients, as needed.
  • Must maintain total flight weight limit according to current vendor policy throughout employment in the role. Total weight is measured with full uniform, helmet, coat and equipment as one would weigh in the aircraft with full uniform. Total weight will also include any personal items that you bring along in the aircraft.

General Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelors of Science in Nursing

Experience: A combination of 3 years of experience in any of the following departments:  Neonatal or Pediatric Intensive Care, or the Pediatric Emergency Department that serves Level 1 Trauma patients. Previous Pediatric Transport experience preferred.  

License(s):

  • Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).

Certifications:

  • Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
  • NRP required within 6 months of hire.
  • PALS required within 6 months of hire.
  • ACLS required within 6 months or hire.
  • Certified Registered Nurse specializing in Neonatal and Pediatric Transport obtained within 24 months of hire.
  • Certified Registered Nurse specializing in Flight obtained within 24 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, procedures, and laws. Ability to organize, plan, coordinate and evaluate nursing services and apply nursing techniques. Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees, and external referral sources. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors. Basic computer charting skills.
