The University of Oklahoma Medical Center Adult Emergency Department (OUH Adult ED) is a large academic emergency department located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is a leading provider of emergency care in the region, offering high-quality, patient-centered emergency care to those in need. Holding the highest national rating a trauma center can receive as verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, OUH Adult ED serves as a comprehensive regional hub for trauma and emergency care and receives patients from across the state of Oklahoma and surrounding states.
Our mission is leading healthcare- in patient care, education, and research. Through our combined efforts, we strive to improve the health of all people. As part of an integrated academic health system, OUH Adult ED saw over 50,000 patient visits in 2023.
OUH Adult ED has 36 licensed treatment rooms including 6 trauma bays, eight ED Observation Rooms, and eight vertical treatment spaces. Additionally, another nine trauma expansion rooms were opened in February of 2023 to increase beds to 53 ED treatment spaces and 8 ED observation rooms.
General Description:
Acts as an expert RN in clinical care of injured patients, coordinates trauma team care delivery and system throughput.
Essential Functions/Duties:
- Provides clinical command and control during trauma activations.
- Responsible for the day to day operation of the trauma emergency department.
- Provides oversight of care for injured patients based on evidence-based trauma care guidelines/protocols.
- Provides clinical expertise and input on procedures including, but not limited to, Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Post-Trauma Clinical Unit, Rapid Response, Mass-Transfusion Protocol, and intravenous access.
- Act as the hospital liaison with all pre-hospital emergency medical services and referring facilities throughout Oklahoma and surrounding areas.
- Coordinate, monitor and document patient and clinical care activities.
- Participate in ongoing performance improvement/patient safety processes related to the injured patient population.
- Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all injured patients.
- Communicate with clinical and management teams to execute and direct patient care services and system throughput.
- Participates in trauma program activities in support of injury prevention, community education, staff and system development.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.
Experience: Two (2) years experience as an RN in Emergency/Trauma/Intensive Care. Or substitute a Master’s degree in Nursing for one (1) year of the required experience
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:
- Current RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).
- Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.
- ACLS (American Heart Association) required upon hire.
REQUIRED WITHIN 12 MONTHS:
- Trauma Nursing Core Course - Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) (TNCC) OR Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses - Society of Trauma Nurses (STN) (ATCN)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (AHA) (PALS) OR Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course - Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) (ENPC)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of nursing theory, standards of nursing care, practices, techniques and procedures. Knowledge of hospital organization. Skill in administering effective nursing care. Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with medical staff. #CB
