Job Description:

General Description: Under general direction, provides assistance to Chaplains and support to families. The Chaplain Assistant will aid the Staff Chaplains, Per-Diem Chaplains and Residents/Interns with some responsibilities that do not require clinical pastoral care.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position.  Inability to perform these responsibilities with or without an accommodation may result in disqualification from the position. 

  • The Chaplain Assistant is not a Chaplain and should refer all pastoral care issues to the appropriate on-call Chaplain.
  • Assist chaplains by helping locate information (next-of-kin, etc.), when requested.
  • Assist chaplains by return belongings to trauma patients, when requested. The Chaplain Assistant will not collect belongings in trauma rooms.
  • Assist chaplains with releasing bodies from the morgue to the appropriate organization/agency.
  • Assist department director and manager with preparing and maintaining statistical reports (Trauma Report, Advanced Directive Report, etc.), as directed.
  • Works closely with Chaplains, funeral homes, and families when the death of a patient occurs.
  • Assists the family members with decisions related to the disposition of the deceased patient’s body by providing information on services provided by the Pastoral Care department and funeral homes.
  • Monitors deceased bodies that come into and out of hospitals for outside autopsy.
  • Responsible for communicating hospital policy regarding body removal with all funeral homes and mortuary services.
  • Assists Chaplains with maintaining hospital death log.
  • Assist Director and/or Manager with special projects at their direction.
  • Provides phone coverage, mail delivery and reception duties for the department.
  • Orders supplies for the department.
  • Communicates patient care information to the appropriate Chaplain.

General Responsibilities:

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: None required.

Experience: 1 or more years of professional work experience required.  Two (2) or more years of experience in a funeral home, religious/ministry setting, hospital or in similar environment preferred.

OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: None required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of funeral customs of various religious, ethnic and fraternal groups.
  • Knowledge of State of Oklahoma laws and processes related to deceased disposition.
  • Ability to work effectively with family members during emotional crisis.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
